How to align with the sacred power of your menstrual blood

Every month, 1.8 billion people across the world menstruate (UNICEF). How menstruation is treated varies across cultures from something to hide and shame to something to celebrate and nurture.

There’s an overwhelming level of menstrual disorders including amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and metrorrhagia. From a Yoga Therapy perspective, healing these physical menstrual disorders requires also healing your beliefs about your period. For example: many people see their period as an annoyance, a burden, or gross… and this belief culminates into physical health issues.

If you’re someone who’s ready to align with the sacred power of your menstrual blood, it starts with healing your beliefs about your blood.

You might like to take this moment to reflect on your thoughts, beliefs, and memories you have with your period.

There’s plenty of promising research on the effects of positive thinking. For those who menstruate, positive thinking towards one’s period cycle can be transformational.

As a Yoga Therapist C-IAYT specializing in womb health, I like to offer my clients positive affirmations for the womb such as: ‘My menstruation is pure power’. It’s completely normal that these bold statements might not feel right to say, but consider you may have been raised to believe periods are shameful or gross. The trick is to be patient with yourself as you explore how this positive mindset shift feels.

Years ago, I used to hate my period. The pain was unbearable and I would pop Tylenol threes like candy. I even went on birth control for 4 consencutive years to suppress my period.

I was at war with my own body

and Doctors did not offer any compassion. In fact, the Doctors made it worse because their solutions only pulled me further away from the sacred power of my period. And this is similar to how the media treats menstruation. They offer ways to hide and ignore your period but not ways to align with its power.

For example: the magazine ads ‘no one will ever know you’re on your period!’. With an image of a joyful woman jumping on trampolines, wearing all white, etc.

With regards to the above ad, the message is to help people hide and ignore their period so they can get on with life.

However, the more empowering perspective would be to nurture your body during your period with rest and solitude.

Aligning with the power of your period begins with learning how to nurture your body during menstruation instead of ignoring it.

There’s a global perception that menstruation is annoying and it’s best to either block or ignore it. From a yoga therapy perspective, negative perceptions (such as guilt, shame, fear) can affect one’s physical health and vice versa. This is the mind-body-soul connection.

For example: If I look in the mirror everyday and say ‘you're ugly’, what will happen to me energetically, physically, and emotionally? This may sounds extreme, but I see people hating on their bodies like this all the time. They mock their uterus like it’s an evil entity.

I’d like to see a world where we stop the guilt and shame when it comes to periods, and start celebrating and speaking positively about this experience.

If you’re ready to take this mindset shift and start aligning with the power of your period, it starts with un-learning. You most likely absorbed a lot of these guilt and shame messages from family, society, and media your entire life regarding your period.

Period blood as a sacred, feminine power is not a popular belief in society

In my course Ignite Your Feminine Power, I dedicate a large portion to un-learning. I shine a light on the negative perceptions - in media and society - when it comes to periods, menopause, sexuality, and more. A lot of these perceptions are unconscious so the un-learning is vital.

The un-learning is an important healing step before you start the holistic daily practices (such as journaling, womb meditations, breathwork, and gentle pelvic movement) that improve your pelvic and reproductive health.

I’ve taken this womb healing journey and it was incredible!

I was someone who hated my period, had debilitating cramps, and blocked it with birth control and pain pills. I’m now a woman who loves every day of her cycle. I get only mild cramping and I love to rest on my bleed days. I’ve discovered the power of my cycle days.

For example: I have certain days each month where I’m wildly creative or super empowered to use my voice and speak my truth. I now align with the power of my cycle and channel it.

With over 1.8 billion people worldwide experiencing a period, its time to ‘re-think’ our beliefs on menstruation to something more empowering and uplifting.
