Your period is a fifth vital sign | Doctors agree

Your menstruation cycle is considered a fifth vital sign along with blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate… and many doctors agree. What does this mean? Your period cycle is literally talking to you and giving you lots of vital information about your health.

If you’re someone who’s experiencing menstrual irregularities, you might be experiencing hormonal imbalances, gynecological diseases, or infections. So, it’s never been a better time to build a healthy relationship with your menstrual cycle and listen to what she has to say.

What does your menstrual cycle say about your health?

If you’re not quite connected to your period cycle, you’re not alone. Modern society has a way of disconnecting women from their bodies instead of empowering them. Perhaps at some point you’ve felt shame for some aspect of being a woman? I’ve felt embarrassed about my own period, even hiding that I bleed or whispering ‘I’ve got my period’ as though it were a huge secret. I was raised to believe periods were an annoyance and certainly shouldn’t be spoken about. This led me to feel quite disconnected from my womb and period cycle for most of my life.

Like me, most of North America is lacking proper pelvic health education. Connecting to one’s menstruation as an indicator of health started when Kelsey Knight and Emily Varnam discovered how uninformed pregnant women were on basic reproductive health knowledge. It inspired them to create a course called the The 5th Vital Sign which used menstruation as a measure of health. From here, they went on a mission across the US to educate women on pregnancy, birth, and menstruation.

Menstruation is a fifth vital sign. A central indicator of health along with body temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure.

As someone who studied womb yoga, I learned to study my blood each month: the blood frequency, flow, color, smell, and texture. This has always provided me with helpful insights into my health. Not only is observing your blood beneficial to your health, it’s also healing to cultivate a more compassionate relationship with your blood and womb.

My experience in building a healthier relationship with my blood was always more of a spiritual and healing journey. What I love about Kelsey and Emily is they’ve uplifted one’s relationship with their womb for optimal physical health as well.

Kelsey and Emily created their reproductive health course and taught it across 43 states. (You can read more about their story on VICE).

What’s your period trying to tell you?

If you’re someone who’s struggling with their period health. For example: experiencing period pains, cramps, PCOS, endometriosis, heavy bleeding, and more, start with rebuilding your relationship with your womb.

How you treat every day of your cycle makes a massive difference. I’m a Yoga Therapist C-IAYT specializing in women’s health and I recommend a daily self-care practice to nurture your womb emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

Everyone has different needs depending on the state of your period health - however - here’s an example of a daily self-care program for optimal period health:

  • Journal tracking: each day of your period cycle, the moon phase, 3 qualities of your emotions

  • A womb friendly affirmation

  • Womb yoga practice with asanas for optimal pelvic health

  • Womb meditations including breath-work for your pelvic floor

  • Community support such as attending a women’s circle, joining a feminine energy course or a FB group for women.

The above might seem a bit overwhelming but a daily program for optimal period health takes as little as 5-10 minutes per day. When I work with women in my private online yoga therapy sessions, I provide them a program similar to what you see above so they can get empowered with their self-care between and beyond our sessions.

Hi! I’m Joss Frank, founder of Wild Womb. I understand how womb and body healing ignites when you look within for guidance because I self-healed from my painful periods, depression, anxiety, sexual assault, emotional and physical abuse… after years of failed efforts to feel better about myself. My failed efforts led to a revelation that true healing comes from within and it requires loving community.

Today, as a Yoga Therapist in my practicum, I help people with womb and body healing so they can reclaim their feminine power, LOVE their sacred feminine bodies, and feel more confident.
