How Yoga Therapy can Help Manage Endometriosis | When Doctors Ignore or Dismiss

If you've ever felt frustrated, ignored, or dismissed by doctors in managing endometriosis, you're not alone. Many women face long waitlists for diagnosis, treatment, or surgery.

Yoga Therapy offers a more natural and holistic approach to managing endometriosis.

What Is Endometriosis?

“Endometriosis is when endometrial tissue is found in abnormal sites - on ovaries, within the myometrium, uterine tubes, or scattered through the peritoneal cavity or further afield (lungs, nose, etc).”
(— Uma Tuli Dinsmore, PhD)

I became interested in researching endometriosis after discovering that several family members had hysterectomies. I was surprised by how quickly doctors recommended such a major procedure without exploring less permanent options first.

Years later, through studying Womb Yoga with Uma Dinsmore (PhD), I learned about Yoga Therapy as a holistic and nurturing approach to treating endometriosis. Case studies showed that women were achieving positive outcomes.

Yoga Therapy offers a holistic approach to managing endometriosis through practices like meditation, womb yoga, and techniques that promote pelvic health and inner awareness.

Unfortunately, natural remedies for managing endometriosis are not widely known.

Endometriosis can cause intense physical, emotional, and energetic pain. In rare cases, it has even been found to affect organs like the lungs and brain.

From an energetic and spiritual perspective:

Shakti is not in her home’
Uma Tuli Dinsmore, PhD

Shakti is a Sanskrit term for feminine energy. From a yogic perspective, Shakti - which lives in the womb - is uprooted from her natural home when experiencing endometriosis.

How Does Endometriosis Feel?

The pain is described as:

  • So bad I want to die,

  • I can’t walk,

  • I’m bloated like I’m pregnant,

  • I can’t have sex,

  • I cant enjoy pleasure,

  • Everything hurts.

The flare-ups can happen at different points in the cycle. It's debilitating and life changing.

No matter where you’re at in your journey with endometriosis, remember you're not alone. If you're interested in exploring natural ways to manage endo…

Consider incorporating daily rest, womb yoga, and womb-friendly meditations into your routine — they can be beneficial.

What Symptoms Are Typically Combined With Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is often combined with other symptoms such as:

  • IBS

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

Senses are heightened when experiencing pain. Blood flow goes to the peripheries, so systems such as digestion are not as important to your body.

Diagnosis of endometriosis is often difficult. I’ve heard many stories from frustrated women who’ve been told by Doctors that there's nothing wrong and they’re fine.

What is the medical treatment for endometriosis?

Once people are diagnosed with endometriosis, the treatment is typically ongoing contraceptives and eventual surgery to remove the deposits (usually laparoscopic).

Even if you’re prescribed surgery, it can take long. One year wait-lists are reported.

How is yoga therapy a natural way to manage endometriosis?

Yoga Therapy offers a comprehensive, natural approach to treating endometriosis. It follows a bio-psychosocial-spiritual model, addressing healing across the mind, body, and spirit.

Clients can expect to explore the underlying causes of their endometriosis and how it affects them emotionally. Private yoga therapy sessions aim to promote optimal menstrual health and enhance awareness of the menstrual cycle, fostering a deeper connection with one's body.

Developing a positive relationship with your menstrual cycle is crucial for effectively managing endometriosis, laying a strong foundation for healing.

If you’re ready to explore alternative therapy for managing your endometriosis, you might like to start here:

  1. Pop your journal open and answer these questions:

    • Do you have period cycle awareness? (for example: do you journal track? Do you know your monthly phases?)

    • Are you aligned with your monthly rhythm? (For example: you know your rest days vs power days)

    • What’s your relationship with your endometriosis pain? (for example: are you compassionate or annoyed with your pain?)

Bottom Line

From a yogic perspective, Shakti, representing feminine energy, is displaced from her natural place, the womb, when someone has endometriosis.

Restoring a loving connection with your womb is the first step to healing from endo, and yoga therapy can help heal and strengthen that connection.

Here’s feedback from an endometriosis client:

"Our session was absolutely wonderful and I have never felt like my womb has ever gotten the attention it deserves...I am excited about the next session! I have been lying down every day to stretch, meditate and listen to my womb. I have been speaking to the water and tuning into my heart."

Joss Frank

Hi! I’m Joss Frank, Yoga Therapist C-IAYT and founder of Wild Womb. I understand how body and womb healing ignites when you look within for guidance because I self-healed from my painful periods, depression, anxiety, sexual assault, emotional and physical abuse after years of failed efforts to feel better about myself. My failed efforts led to a revelation that true healing comes from within and it requires loving community and professional support.

Today, I help people with womb and body healing so they can reclaim their feminine energy, love their bodies, and feel more confidence.
