What’s it like to be both Indigenous and Black in Canada?

Hi! Thanks for being here! Inside Wild Womb, I openly share about my healing journey.

A big part of that journey is my experience as a BIWOC (Black, Indigenous, and German). I’d love to share a little bit about being BIWOC in Canada.

My background is Metis (Cree and Iroquois), Black, and German. My ancestors on my Mom’s side experienced both slavery and colonization. I feel that historical trauma in my blood. When my Great Grandma moved here from Mississippi to Vernon, BC, Canada, she was regularly called a 'N****r' while walking down the street with her grandkids. My mom, uncles and aunties as little children had to watch their Grandma endure racism. My Great Grandma would say: Shhhh, it's ok, don't say anything'.

As is the case for most people of color, you have to internalize the rage.

I've lost 2 uncles and an aunty to a system that never supported them or gave them a fighting chance. I've felt judged and shamed for my expressing how this all makes me feel. I want to scream from the rooftops their names. I know you were trying to cope with generational trauma.

Here’s what I discovered about being Black, Indigenous, or a person of color…

Being hidden, quiet, and voiceless is a survival mechanism for most.

I was raised on these principles. The irony is that I had to endure a white catholic school system my whole education (looking into the eyes of cultural assimilation for 18 years). I now understand why I had so much rage for that place.

My Black Grandpa told me last week: Suddenly in Canada, people are admitting they're Indigenous. In my days, you'd NEVER EVER admit that because It was dangerous.

How do I feel about Canada? This country has blood on its hands. I feel the earth in BC, Canada begging for apologies, acknowledgement, and justice. We can't move forward as a country without admitting what's happening.

If you’re BIPOC, there’s healing in expressing and sharing your story…even if it’s privately in the pages of your journal.

When you don’t speak it, you store it, and that gets heavy.

You deserve to feel light and confident. I’m sending you lots of love and support. You’re not alone.

I host a free online meditation class for BIWOC on the YYOGA platform every Mon evening at 6:45pm PST. I’d love you to join us, save your seat here
